Wave Pool’s “The Welcome Project” has been undergoing rapid transformation and expansion since receiving an Impact 100 award in fall of 2018. Guatamalan immigrant and artist Erika Allen has taken on the role of managing the storefront and building connections with refugee and immigrant communities all over the city. The Welcome Project is now partnering regularly with Cincinnati Compass, Refugee Connect, and others in building bridges through art and food. The storefront is featuring the art work of over a dozen refugees and weekly ceramics classes serve both the immigrant community and our Camp Washington neighbors alike and have become a consistent community building force. With construction well underway in the kitchen and market (ribbon cutting planned for November), The Welcome Project has been hosting cross-cultural dinners all throughout the city with community organization partners each month. These dinners, called ‘Cincinnati’s Table’, have expanded The Welcome Project’s reach in more ways than one, bringing more people literally to our table for conversation, employment, empowerment, and friendship.
