For many individuals striving to enter the workforce, transportation remains a stubborn barrier. Without a reliable vehicle, getting to a job interview or a new position—even one recently secured after job training—can be nearly impossible. Public transportation often doesn’t align with work shifts, especially for those in trades, healthcare, or culinary services. It’s a classic “chicken-and-egg” dilemma: you need a job to afford a car, but you need a car to get to work.
Client Spotlights
Alycia, a medical assistant graduate and mom, used her Bridge Program minivan to start her new job at UC Health—and ensure her kids made it to school and appointments.
Ryan, a Per Scholas IT grad, bought a Toyota Yaris to begin work at Cincinnati Children’s. He paid off his loan, moved to Arizona to be near family, and got married—an incredible year of transformation, made possible by mobility.
With a 2023 grant from Impact 100, ChangingGears expanded its Bridge Program, which helps new jobseekers—many of whom completed training through CityLink Center—purchase affordable, reliable vehicles as they transition into employment. The program not only provides access to transportation, but also includes structured payment plans and financial education to support long-term success.
ChangingGears used the grant to purchase, restore, and deliver 20 vehicles, each matched with a client stepping into a new career. Thanks to this program, these individuals didn’t just receive keys—they received a critical lifeline to self-sufficiency and stability.
